Mercedes-Benz codes are typically a five or three digit number on the vehicle, such as DB744 or 300. Generally, vehicles made before 2003 start with DB, and vehicles made after 2004 show without the "DB". "DB" in the paint color codes is irrelevant--i.e. DB040 and 040 are the same color. The tag can usually be found near the radiator in the engine bay and depending on the year, the tag itself can be confusing - with many numbers.  This is a more straightforward example:
